Future of Firefighting: Unmanned Aircraft

In a previous post, we explored ways that technology was going to enable firefighters to be more effective at their jobs, but as autonomous vehicles, such as self-driving cars, start to become a reality, there is also an opportunity for similar technologies to be used in first response.

An article in Wired explores four unmanned aircraft technologies that Lockheed Martin is starting to explore for fighting wildfires:

  • Quadcopter drones for identifying the fires

  • A cargo chopper which can pick up water from a pond and then dump water on the site

  • A surveillance drone for identifying any people in or around the incident

  • A helicopter outfitted for landing and rescuing humans

Head over to the Wired article below, and be sure to check in for more technologies being used in the space.
